School wants to extend assembly hall for performances

New plans have been proposed to create a performance area at Westergate Community School.

Deputy headteacher Andrea Hill has asked Arun District Council for planning permission for a 142.5sqm extension to the school's 628sqm assembly hall. It also doubles as a canteen.

The extra space will become the canteen. This will enable the hall to be used as a permanent space for performances with seating for 200 spectators.

In a statement with the proposals, Mrs Hill says: "In order to achieve this, we need to move the canteen out of the hall, which is why we need to extend the building at one end, providing us with extra accommodation for the canteen."

"The extension to the canteen is, therefore, a functional need.

"However, it will enable us to fulfil educational needs through the refurbishment of the hall, by improving our curriculum, our extra-curricular activities and the educational and leisure needs of the community."

The creation of the Six Villages' only dedicated space for the arts played a large part in the successful bid for the school on Lime Avenue to become a specialist school for visual and performing arts from last September.
