Sea defences need improving in Bognor Regis

A WARNING has been given that proposals to maintain sea defences for the Bognor Regis area will increase the risk of flooding.

The Environment Agency wants to keep the current level of protection against the waves. Its preferred strategy is subject to public consultation until August 28.

But Bognor Regis Civic Society deputy chairman Hugh Coster said the agency had put forward the lowest possible option to keep the sea at bay.

"As the sea level rises over the next 100 years, as they inevitably will, the flooding risk to the town increases.

"Although the Environment Agency's proposals sound good, they are not that good. And the agency is hopelessly underfunded," he said.

"We should all be making a fuss about that before the water comes over the beach."

The latest exhibition by the Environment Agency about its plans from Pagham to the River Arun will take place from 1pm-8pm on August 21 at the Arun Leisure Centre in Felpham.
