Now in its third year, the festival attracted up to 50,000 people last month from as far away as Belgium, Holland and Germany and organisers believe it could be the biggest event of its kind in Europe.

Visitors flocked to stalls showcasing the best in food and drink from around the area, including fresh fish dishes and locally produced wines.

The festival was spread across two sites at The Stade, Hastings' fishing district.

Councillor Peter Pragnell, leader of Hastings Borough Council, said: "This is great news and winning this award is a reflection on what a fantastic event the Seafood and Wine Festival has grown into over its three years. This year we had something like 50,000 visitors over the weekend and a huge range of stallholders over the two main sites.

"I would like to say very well done to the team who have all worked so hard to organise the festival and those who gave up their time to steward on the two days.

"Next year the festival will be on September 19 and 20."

The award was presented at a gala dinner.
