SEARCH FOR UNEXPLODED FIREWORKS

POLICE are conducting a 500 metre search from the site of the Shortgate fireworks factory explosion today (Friday) for unexploded fireworks and small explosives.

About 30 fireworks have so far been found in the search, which should finish tomorrow (Saturday).

A police spokesman said: 'Letters have been delivered to houses and businesses notifying occupants, and anyone who finds a firework is asked not to touch it but to contact police immediately. The scattered fireworks are being made safe by members of the Health and Safety Executive.

'The road closure will continue for the time being. Emergency vehicles - fire engines and police cars - were damaged at the time of the explosion. They remain parked in the road outside the site and are awaiting examination.

'We are working as quickly as possible to remove obstructions from the road in a view to narrow the cordon and reduce disruption, especially for residents and nearby businesses. The nearby Wok Inn will reopen on Saturday.

'We are grateful for the support we have received and hope to brings things back to normal as soon as possible.'
