Sedlescombe village voice

The cars, plus several hundred more, will be at Hooe’s Old Motor Club’s annual show to be held on the recreation ground, Hooe on Sunday, August 5 from midday to 5 pm. Admission is £5, free entry for children. There will be displays of cars from the turn of the last century until 1970 including the prestigious lady and car competition. There will be many trade stands, not all car related. The show commences with a musical entertainment provided by the Hooe Silver Band.

Sedlescombe and district Flower club meet at the village hall on Wednesday August 8. This month there will be a demonstration by Sue Oaten entitled “My Lady”, now whenever I see the title I try and imagine what might appear on the night. Will it be my fair lady, lady and the lamp or even lady and the tramp, who knows? There is only one sure way to find out though, go along to the evening. Doors open at 7pm, in readiness for the 7.30pm start. Members and visitors are always very warmly welcomed so if you need a break from the Olympics and television repeats, make it a date to try something new in the village.

There is to be a coffee morning on Thursday August 9 starting at 10am at 2 Forge Cottages, The Green. All are welcome to attend whether to catch up with friends and share some time together or maybe make some new ones. This is being held in aid of Church funds.

Rural Pastimes will once again be taking place at Pestalozzi village over the weekend of August 11 and 12, with many of the features you would expect from this type of show more details on this next week.

Please note that Jelly beans Toddler group that meets on Tuesday mornings at the village hall are taking a well earned rest for the month of August however in the mean time is it time for you to have a summer sort out? Jellybeans Toddler Group is holding an indoor Boot Fayre at Sedlescombe Village Hall on Saturday August 18 from 2-4pm. Tables are available to rent for £10 each with early booking advised so please call 01424 883550 now.

This will be followed by another indoor Boot Fayre once again at Sedlescombe village hall on Saturday, August 25 from 2-4pm. Funds raised from this fayre will go towards Sean Wood’s Headstone. Sean was a lovely young lad in the village but during December last year tragically passed away. If anyone wishes to donate any unwanted items then Karen Dann would gladly sell them on the day and this would all go towards Sean’s Fund. You may have found it a bit quieter around the village as Marian Ham writes: The school has closed for the holiday, having had a great end of term with many successful events including sports day, award assemblies, Year 6 party evening, Good Behaviour trip to Raystede Animal Sanctuary, picnic and games for all children who walk to school, as well as a farewell to Richard Maidment, our great Chairman of Governors. Mr. Maidment has been our Chairman of Governors for nine years and devoted much time, energy and enthusiasm to his role, in addition to being totally dedicated to helping our school. The children presented him with a large school-made card which every child has signed, and a beautiful painting of the school, painted by local artist Mark Fisher. They also made up a poem about him and performed this in our final assembly.He will be greatly missed by all Governors, staff, families and children.

School reopens on September 6 for all children in Years 1 to 6 with our new reception children beginning in groups through out September. There will be a few jobs taking place at school during the holidays and staff will be in to prepare for the new school year. We would like to start a second Walking Bus from the southern end of the village in the new school year. This new ‘walking bus’ would need to cross over the main street in the village, and ESCC have agreed to give a free uniform, pole and training for a pedestrian crossing patrol person for the school, mornings only, 8.30 - 9.00am. I would like to find up to 3 persons in the village who might be interested in this role, perhaps doing a couple of mornings

This is a great way to help the school, children and village and encourage some parents/carers to drop off their children at the southern end of the village, drop off point to be finalised, so that their children can walk to school, which will help to keep the area around the school less congested and much safer in the mornings.
