PC Matt Phelps, of Littlehampton Police, said: "Incidents of this nature in Littlehampton are, thankfully, extremely rare. However, this was a serious and unprovoked attack on a defenceless man.

"We have reason to believe that there are number of people in the local area who either saw what happened, know something about the incident or know the men who committed this assault. "

He added that the victim had taken the brave decision to release the photograph, in the hope that it would appeal to people's better nature.

"I would urge anyone who does know something to please come forward and speak to the police."
