‘Severe’ effect on Arun cash

COUNCILLORS were warned that building fewer homes in the years up to 2019 could have a serious effect on Arun District Council’s finances.

Head of finance and property Alan Peach told the full council that over the six years from 2014/15, the total amount of government funding lost from the New Homes Bonus would be £3.297m, with a further £441,000 lost from lower council tax as a result of fewer homes being built.

He said in a report to the Arun’s last full council meeting, on Thursday (May 30): “While the significant effect on the planning process is the primary issue, under the current funding regime, where development attracts funds, this will have a severe impact on the council’s finances.”
