Eighteen companies have so far stepped up to take part in Heroes Welcome, a national campaign designed to show support for and appreciation of the Armed Forces community.

The businesses will display a window sticker showing they are happy to offer a discount, service upgrade or special acknowledgement to military personnel on production of an ID card or veterans’ badge.

Crawley’s participation in the scheme is one of the first actions to follow on from the launch of its Community Covenant, which was signed at the Armed Forces Day event in July.

Heroes Welcome was launched at Barclay’s, in the High Street, on Wednesday (November 20) and was attended by soldiers from the 103 Battalion Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, based in Kilnmead, Northgate.

Major Paul Furber said: “This is all part of the Community Covenant which forms the bedrock of what we do here in Crawley. The fact we have local business people who are willing to support us in the context of this scheme is absolutely fantastic.

“We, as a group of service personnel, really do acknowledge the good work that Crawley Borough Council and all of the community do in Crawley.”

Cllr Nigel Boxall, Cabinet Member for Community Engagement, and chair of the Crawley Civil Military Partnership, said: “We are delighted to support the Heroes Welcome scheme which will extend a welcome to all sections of the community as well as visitors.

“We want to officially recognise the courage of our servicemen and I encourage businesses to make this commitment too.

“I also want to say a big thank you to those that have already signed up to the scheme.”

John Senior, of Heroes Welcome UK, added: “We are delighted to welcome the borough of Crawley to the Heroes Welcome network and thank everyone for their support to all those serving in the armed forces.”
