Shops evacuated in town blaze drama

CUSTOMERS were evacuated and several businesses forced to close after a fire broke out in a shop toilet.

The blaze, at the Card Factory, in Montague Street, started shortly before 2pm on Friday when a boiler in the first-floor toilet caught light.

Fire crews, including engines from Worthing, Lancing and Bognor Regis, attended the scene and helped lead the store's concerned staff and shoppers to safety.

Shops, including The Body Shop, T-Mobile, Sussex Stationers and Rosebys, were also evacuated and closed, so a cordon could be set up around the fire.
