A community choir, which performs concerts around the area twice a year, has found an experienced new music director.

The Shoreham Singers-by-Sea will be under the direction of Mike Hatchard, after the group bid goodbye to ‘well loved music director of many years’ Ian White.

A spokesperson for the group said they were ‘incredibly fortunate’ to be joined by Mr Hatchard, who hosts the ‘highly-rated’ monthly Jazz Breakfasts at the Ropetackle Arts Centre.

An accomplished violinist, he has toured America as accompanist to jazz and pop singer Cleo Laine in the past.

Mr Hatchard also runs an orchestra in Hastings and has directed several choirs.

Recently, he raised thousands of pounds for Children in Need by cycling from Lands End to John O’Groats – towing his piano behind him and playing concerts along the way.

Mr Hatchard joins the seven-year-old choir which was started by bassist Herbie Flowers at Ropetackle Arts Centre but, due to growing numbers, now rehearses twice a month at the Shoreham Centre.

Membership is open to everyone, with no auditions and no previous singing experience required.
