Shoreham engineer wins international award

AN engineer from Shoreham has won an international award.

Bernard Challen, of The Avenue, Shoreham, has been awarded the Medal of Honour by the Society of Automotive Engineers International.

It is the first time the award has been made to an engineer from the UK.

Mr Challen said: "I am truly honoured to be selected for this award.

"My thanks go to all the professional staff within SAE who make things happen and also my wife of nearly 40 years who has been a great support to me."

Ricardo

Mr Challen was born in Shoreham and was a pupil at the old St Peter's school in Ship Street.

The father of two worked at Shoreham-based firm, Ricardo, from 1970 to 1991 before becoming an independent engineering consultant.

He was given the award for his 30 years of service to the SAE.

Mr Challen said: "The value that professional engineers create within society sometimes goes without celebration and I hope that the SAE helps engineering to work for society and assists the engineers themselves."
