Tom Naylor, race director, said: “Every year we are truly humbled by the amount of time and energy our volunteers are prepared to give to help make the Brighton Marathon Weekend happen. We couldn’t do it without them. We look forward to welcoming back our regular volunteers and to introducing new volunteers to the team in 2017.”

Last year’s event was supported by around 1,500 volunteers. There will be a wide variety of volunteer roles available, including at the start of the marathon and as part of the finish team to welcome the runners across the finish line. Volunteers will also have roles on the Brighton Marathon 10k and marathon courses, at the Cancer Research UK Kids and Teens Mini Mile Races on the Saturday, at the exhibition or as part of the medical team.

A briefing evening will be held nearer the event for Brighton Marathon 2017 volunteers where they will be provided with a volunteer briefing manual containing lots information such as key timings, dos and don’ts, emergency protocols, maps and more.

She said: “This will be my seventh year of volunteering on the water station. Our club have managed this since the first Brighton Marathon and are really proud of it. The atmosphere is amazing and we really feel by being at mile 24 that we can make a difference to the runners with enthusiastic words of encouragement, water and not forgetting the jelly babies and fruit. If people are struggling we have also been known to run with them to the end. It’s very rewarding and the team are always very keen to return each year.”
