Sindy helps Cancer Research

It appealed to buyers on Ebay too - when Joy Beddows auctioned her customised pink Sindy she was thrilled to see bidding reach 102.

Joy was then able to present this as a donation to Rod Bailey of Cancer Research UK in Bexhill's town centre.

Joy, of Western Road, is not a volunteer at the shop but is caring for her husband who has cancer and "wanted to do something to help".

She commented: "I got the idea for Sindy from a doll forum that I belong to online. They created a unique Sindy for Red nose day as a group project, and it raised about 75.00, so I hoped my Sindy would do the same....as it was, she did far better.

"I had a rare type of cancer, called choriocarcinoma, myself back in 1976, and the treatment was developed purely using donations, so I guess I owe my life to the generosity of others.

"I wanted to show that there are lots of ways to help charities that don't involve working in shops, and can involve people doing their normal hobbies and interest...mine is restoring and re-vamping dolls."

During the internet auction, Joy received strong support and encouragement from Ebayers, including one who said: "I lost my mum five years ago this week after a five year battle and it still hurts like it was yesterday. My dad has recently undergone chemo too, but has recovered so far. I was sobbing earlier and then I saw your listing - what an inspiration you are."

The winner told her: "I got outbid once today and nearly didn't bid again and then thought I would try that extra 2 and got her...It's a woncerful cause and a wonderful thing that you did, I am honoured to have won her. You and your husband take good care and I wish you well always."
