Smashing gift for table tennis-loving Angmering pupils

Youngsters at St Wilfrid’s Catholic Primary School, in Arundel Road, have been busy, chopping, spinning and smashing table tennis balls on their new piece of kit.

The gear was purchased by the school thanks to a £500 donation from the Arun Well-being small grants scheme designed to promote healthy living within the community.

To mark the occasion, Angmering district councillor and Arun’s deputy leader, Dudley Wensley, played a few sets with some of the pupils.

Head teacher Sharon Reynolds said she was ‘grateful’ for all the council’s support.

“The children told us that they like table tennis because it is fast and fun,” she explained. “From our point of view, it helps children to develop excellent eye-hand co-ordination as well as being good all-round exercise.

“The tables also have the great advantage of giving the children exercise all year through, as they can be used in the school hall as well as in the playground.”

Councillor Paul Wotherspoon, Arun District Council’s cabinet member for community services, said: “I’m delighted that the Arun Well-being and health partnership has been able to support this wonderful venture. It’s really important to encourage children to start getting active at an early age.”

As well as being a great resource for the school, the tables will also be available for the community to use by booking them through St Wilfrid’s secretary.
