Softball: Chichester Falcons have a base to build on

Chichester Falcons Softball Club's first competitive outing was a tough indoor double header at Portsmouth's Nuffield Health Centre gym.

The first fixture, against Hursley Hurricanes, saw strong batting go largely unrewarded against an experienced fielding team.

Good singles from Max Hookway and Jenny Dunn got the Falcons working around the bases, the innings ending with three on the board.

When the Falcons took the field, breathtaking plays kept the Hurricanes at bay.

Shortstop Ben Sawkins and first base Lisa Martins teamed up to frustrate the Hurricanes as Yoshi Yamada expertly covered right field.

The Hurricanes, one of the strongest teams in the southern area, steadily made their way around the diamond to bring in six runs.

The second innings saw improved batting from the Falcons to bring their score to seven. The Falcons took the field with a one-run lead but the Hurricanes had too much and it ended 12-7.

The Falcons’ second fixture was home to Baffins Brewers.

A shaky start saw some Brewers runners on base quickly, but again the Falcons fielding shone as they shut down the lead runners thanks to spectacular throws from Alex Rigert to catcher Janice Morgan.

Once the Falcons had a foothold, pitcher David Morris and Morgan removed several batters with some strong, consistent pitching.

The Falcons slammed several line drives towards right field and scored several runs. Jenny Dunn rounded off the innings with spectacular base running. The first innings ended 7-5 to the Falcons.

The second saw several double plays thanks to Lisa Martins’ dependable glove.

The Brewers scored two home runs.
