Solutions sought to health centre plans

A new health centre for Steyning could still be on the cards after the agent for the scheme, Mr Michael Bish, told Horsham Council's planning committee he was hopeful a solution could be found to the problem of size of the proposed building.

The committee had backed the scheme by delegating to the head of development, in conjunction with Cllr Vivien Lyth and Cllr Michael Jackson, with a view to approve, providing various problems, including ridge height and association with the neighbouring Croft Meadow scheme were satisfactorily addressed.

Mr Bish, who had been working on the plans for two years said he was will to work with the council to find a way forward after concerns were expressed about the bulk and scale of the three-story development in Tanyard Lane.

"I have considered amendments to the design and believe we can address the concerns. He suggested lowering the eaves or sinking the building into the ground were ways forward, while opaque windows would address the problem of overlooking Croft Meadow.

Dr Eric Noren, the lead GP on the health centre scheme, said he had been working to get a new health centre for the town for ten years.

"The current building is very cramped and we have therapists working out of cupboards and staff working in Portakabins.

"We have consulted very closely and have come up with some very good plans which are fantastic and financially viable," he said.
