Sports achievers honoured

HIGH achievers in the sporting world from across the county received awards at a ceremony at the Uckfield Civic Centre on Tuesday.

Councillor Michael Tunwell, Duncan Goodhew MBE and Southern FM's managing director, Bob Hoad, presented the sports development awards sponsored by Southern FM's fun-d 2000.

National awards went to:-

Tom Carruthers from Beacon Community College, a high achiever in rugby;

Felix Kelly and Nicholas Bailey, both of Beacon Community College, for Taekwon Do;

Heather Olver from Heathfield Community College for badminton;

Craig Ivemy from Ringmer Community College for athletics, and from the same college Luke Thomson for badminton and Jessica Green for gymnastics.

Regional awards went to:-

Emma Overy and David Rayment from Heathfield Community College for table tennis;

From Ringmer Community College Kieran Lusk and James Netts for baseball, Daniel Leach for football, Kyle Lusk and Daniel Mockford for roller hockey, Alexander Crouch for squash and Kristy Baldock for swimming;

Elizabeth Lake of Priory School for rugby;

Heather Smith of Seaford Head Community College for rugby union.

Team achievement awards went to Heathfield Community College for badminton and Seaford Head Community College for football.

The community sports leader/helper award went to Anthony Leung from Beacon Community College and Matthew Sneyd of Seaford Head Community College.

At a county level there were many high achievers:-

Philip Cooper, Jonathan Pass and Andrew Walters from Beacon Community College won awards for rugby;

From Hailsham Community College, Lauren Forsyth for athletics and Sophie Jackson for netball;

From Heathfield Community College, Joanne Millward and Kirsten Read for badminton and Hayley Bourne and Niki Siggs for hockey.

Priory School also did well, with Andrew Birch gaining awards in hockey, athletics and cricket, while from the same school Leah Singleton won one for badminton and Ben Walker for cricket.

Clare Smith from Tideway Community School won an award for her gymnastics.

All of the winners were congratulated on their achievements and a closing address was given by councillor Rupert Simmons.
