St Mary's cancels Christmas fair

St Mary's special school cancelled a major fundraiser because of concerns over swine flu.

The Christmas Fair due to take place this Saturday in Wrestwood Road is a regular event which raises thousands of pounds.

Plans were in place to make it as successful and enjoyable as ever but the decision was made early this week to cancel and hold the event in January as a winter fair.

The hope is to contain and prevent the spread of flu-like illness and protect vulnerable children from infection.

St Mary's Trust stated: "St Mary's has recently had a small number of children and staff who have become unwell with flu-like symptoms.

"After taking advice from our local NHS and the Health Protection Agency, all of those who are unwell are receiving appropriate medical treatment.

"However the Trust is not complacent and wants to do all it can to ensure the health and wellbeing of its children and staff.

"In order to protect the vulnerable children within the school community, after discussion with local health services, the Trust has decided to cancel several upcoming events at St Mary's, including

Saturday's Christmas Fayre and next month's Parents' Consultation Days.

"This is only a precautionary measure and should not be reason for concern.

"The safety of the children and staff will always be the top priority."
