COMMUNITY NEWS & REVIEWS: EWHURST PARISH COUNCIL. - During the EPC meeting, held last week (9th) an item of exceptional interest to the community was brought to our attention. A message of great concern has been received regarding Dog Fouling within our community. Many of us have been victims of this disgraceful and totally unnecessary anti-social '˜mess' left behind by dogs and ignored by their inconsiderate or uncaring owners/walkers. Not only is this a very unpleasant blot on our landscape -or pavement - but it can & has, caused severe health problems to some children who have inadvertently come into contact with this horrid residue ! It is also a nasty hazard for wheelchair and/or invalid carriage users as well as those pushing prams, baby buggy's and even trailing bikes, scooters, skateboards and other such like items around the village or to the playing field, and making the clearing and cleaning of the articles a very unpleasant chore. England is known as a '˜nation of dog lovers', and quite rightly so, but with this '˜crown' comes a host of responsibilities, - and caring for your four legged friend - IN ALL WAYS - comes top of the list, and this includes clearing up after them !. Looking after your dog is NOT just a case of feeding, grooming & giving them attention, it also includes exercising them, and this of course means walking them !. All responsible dog owners/carers, when out roaming with their dogs, always take a supply of doggy bags - for scooping up of their poo ! These doggy poo bags, are generally extremely cheap to buy and takes but a few seconds to clear up and makes such a difference to our villages and our countryside. So please, do remember to take a bag or two out with you, when you next meander through the parish. Please also, take this '˜offering' home to dispose of in the proper place, or pop it in one of the dog waste bins which are situated at the bottom of Sheringham Close and outside St. Mark's church car park, - DO NOT lob it into the nearest bush or tree ! - this

THE SOUTH DOWNS: I know that it isn’t within our area or community, but I’ve been requested to just advise you all that in a remarkable display of people power, the future of the Eastbourne Council’s Downland has been secured. As a result of a public poll, in which residents voted 3-1 in favour of keeping the downland in public ownership, the decision has been taken to cancel the potential sell off of the Council owned land. Thanks must go to all the organisations and individuals who worked to bring this important campaign to a successful conclusion. Many of us have visited Beachy Head, Belle Toute, or Birling Gap and even perhaps have strolled along the Downs, in various directions and have enjoyed this amazing and beautiful part of the countryside. As a child I lived at the foot of the Downs and along with my siblings, various school pals and other neighbouring children, spent many, many happy and unfettered hours roaming freely and unhindered all around and along this unique landscape.( Totally unheard of, or allowed, in todays world!) Learning that it will not go under the developers blue print and that 1000’s of houses will not be scouring this lovely ‘national treasure’ is music to not only my ears but to thousands of others. So please go along, visit, walk, explore and enjoy them!

ROTHER RAMBLERS: Notice of two more walks from those that will also be pleased with the above news and who love nothing better than exploring our beautiful countryside. Members of Rother Ramblers have arranged another two walks this week for our consideration. Walk No: 1 is planned for Saturday March 18th and is a short 5 mile meander ‘going west from Robertsbridge’ The meeting point is in the Station Road car park, Robertsbridge - which is free!. OS EXP. 124 & 136. TQ737235.(SatNav TN32 5AN) at 10.00am. The no: 905 bus leaves Hastings at 9.38am and the train leaves Hastings at 9.47am. Both should arrive in time to meet up with fellow walkers at the meeting point. A short refreshment stop midway along the route chosen is expected. John will be the ‘walk leader’ for this outing and you can contact him on: 01424-773998 for all further details. Walk No: 2 is slightly longer and in the opposite direction being a 10.5 miles meander of Appledore to Woodchurch circular. The meeting place for this walk is the Village Hall in Appledore. OS EXP.125. TQ955296. (SatNav TN26 2AF) again at 10.00am. A picnic lunch is once more recommended for all. EAST SUSSEX MOBILE LIBRARY: Once more, we look forward to welcoming the little Mobile Library Service as the van, carrying all the exciting goodies on board, wends it’s way through our little countryside lanes on it’s way to our outlying rural communities. This will be the last visit for this month, so please make sure you don’t miss it ~ and remember to stock up on your book quota to tide you over until it returns in April. The little van will first call to Staplecross, on Thursday March 23rd. where it will park in Cricketers Field, between 1.40pm and 2.10pm. Following on from that session, it will then meander down to Cripps Corner, - where it will now use the car park of the ‘Direct Recovery Yard between 2.20pm and 2.45pm. for the foreseeable future. This venue is on the Battle Road, just over the bridge, toward Swailes Green. The residents of this little hamlet can then avail themselves of this vital and much needed service. This ‘stopping place’ - due to the closure of the local pub and uncertainty of it’s proposed future, can no longer be classed as ‘new’, but will continue to park here for the foreseeable future, so please do still make as much use of the facilities on board when the van visits your areas. The Library is about more than just books, so please come along and see for yourself and help keep this service going for the benefit of all who live in our outlying rural areas and perhaps, cannot always easily access the Main Branch facilities

DATES FOR YOUR DIARIES: Notice No:1 - Ewhurst, Staplecross & Bodiam Garden Society, will be holding the first of their little local horticultural shows at their next member’s meeting, which will be held on Thursday March 16th. 7.30pm at their usual venue, of the Village Hall, Northiam Road, Staplecross, TN32 5QG. Their ‘Spring Show’ is a must for one & all and is truly a delight for all of our senses. Being a part of the evening’s meeting this is a ‘Must- Not- Miss’ event. The speaker will be Katherine Lynn and her talk is entitled “Tiptoe through the Tulips” - very appropriate and very Spring like ! Please consider entering a class - or two - in this fantastic little show. We are aware that there are many talented people in our villages who could submit good entries, but perhaps lack the confidence to do so. Now is your chance to do so. Give them a call,- help is always at hand, even on the day of the show. The evening’s talk is free for members but any non-member/visitor will be very welcome for a miserly charge of just 2:00. A welcome cuppa amongst congenial company, during half-way and a superb raffle completes another fantastic show and social evening. - Don’t Miss It !.

Notice No:2 - A short and gentle reminder that Saturday April 8th is the day of Staplecross Village Hall Mammoth Jumble Sale. Doors open at 2.00pm and all are invited to bring big bags and enjoy filling them with bargains galore. A cake stall, a raffle and a welcome cup of tea or coffee completes the event and for those who can’t deliver their ‘donations’ to the village hall on the morning of the sale - from 9.30am onwards, - please contact Hilary on:01580-830704 or Anne on; 01580-831881 who will do their best to arrange collection.

Notice No:3 - Advance notice of a growing popular event of interest to all residents of our parish community. Ewhurst Parish Council will be holding their Annual Parish Assembly on Tuesday April 11th in the Village Hall, Northiam Road, Staplecross TN32 5QG. The meeting will commence at 7.15pm, but arrive early, from 6.45pm to enjoy the stalls & displays depicting what goes on within our parish, enjoy all the delightful buffet provided by our own merry members of our local W.I. and meet your local Parish- District and County Councillors, as all three tiers of local government will be represented, before settling down to enjoy the programme arranged for you. As always, - it promises to be a good evening.

CHURCH SERVICES: Church services for the parish of Ewhurst will commence at St.

James the Great, Ewhurst Green on Sunday March 19th. Lent 3. at 9.30am. This service will include Holy Communion. A Family Service at St. Giles church, Bodiam will follow directly after at 11.15am. This service will also include Holy Communion. There will be NO SERVICE TODAY at St. Mark’s church, Staplecross.
