EWHURST PARISH COUNCIL: This is just a little reminder of the changes that will be taking place in the children’s Play Park, situated within the Playing Field, Northiam Road, Staplecross during the forthcoming few days. The long awaited new additions to the existing play equipment is all set to become reality during the week ahead and a lot of disruption is likely,due to this work being carried out. Access is also likely to be restricted because of the nature of the work and the Ewhurst Parish Council has decided in view of this and the safety aspect for the public, to CLOSE the Children’s Play Park for the week commencing MONDAY JUNE 29th until (approximately) FRIDAY JULY 3rd. This will allow the contractors installing these new play items, to do so as quickly and conveniently as possible, with as little disturbance to everyone. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause to any and all users of the Play Park, and the Playing Field surrounding it, but hope you’ll agree that the pleasure the new equipment will bring, will make it all worth while. Thank you for your patience in this matter.

EWHURST, STAPLECOSS & BODIAM GARDEN SOCIETY: ROSE SHOW RESULTS: The recent ‘Rose Show’ organised by our own local Garden Society, and held at the Village Hall, Staplecross was, - according to the many delightful and genuine comments received,- “a great success and one of the loveliest in recent times”. It was so nice to see so many exhibitors taking part and the wide variety of exhibits and the scents that filled the hall, were a joy to behold and certainly made this an afternoon to treasure. The Rose Show results are as follows: Class 1- One specimen rose, any named variety~ 1st Jennie Lynam, 2nd Hilary Ganly, 3rd Daphne Longmuir. Class 2- One specimen rose, any variety~ 1st Ruth Close, 2nd Jeanette Franklyn and 3rd Sue Wideman. Class 3- Three specimen roses, different varieties~ 1st Barry Longmuir, 2nd Joan Gilson and 3rd Anne Reed. Class 4- One stem cluster-flowered (floribunda) rose~ 1st Ann Brookes, 2nd Pam Underhill, and Joan Gilson was 3rd. Class 5-Three large flowered roses of 1 variety in 3 stages of bloom~ the winner was Pam Underhill, 2nd Ann Brookes and 3rd was Barry Longmuir. Class 6- Seasonal flower arrangement to include roses-open to all~ 1st Ann Brookes, 2nd Pam Dance and 3rd Ruth Close. Class 7 - No entries. Class 8- A green arrangement-open to all~ 1st Ann Brookes, 2nd Pam Underhill, 3rd Pam Dance. Class 9 - No entries. Class 10-Three Clematis blooms~ 1st Pam Underhill, 2nd Barry Longmuir, 3rd Sue Wideman. Class 11- Five Fuschia flowers, floating in a bowl~ 1st Pam Underhill, 2nd Pam Dance. Class 12 Flowering pot plant,-excluding Orchids~ 1st Sandy Collins, 2nd Ann Brookes, 3rd, Rosemary Stevens. Class 13- A pot plant grown for it’s foliage~ 1st Pam Underhill, 2nd Joan Gilson and 3rd Rosemary Stevens. Class 14- Stem of a flowering shrub~ Winner was John Stringer, 2nd Joan Gilson, 3rd Jeanette. Class 15- Stem of a shrub grown for it’s foliage~ 1st Ann Brookes, 2nd Joan Gilson and 3rd Pam Dance. Class 16- An Orchid pot plant, possessed by the exhibitor for at least 6 months~ Winner was Ann Brookes. Class 17-Container of cut flowers from exhibitor’s own garden~ 1st Pam Underhill, 2nd Pam Dance and 3rd Joan Gilson. Class 18- A hanging basket (14”)~ and the winner was Pam Dance. Class 19- Container of 5 stems of Pinks~ 1st Pam Underhill, 2nd Ann Brookes and 3rd Ella Wood. Class 20-Container of 1 stem of each of 3 distinct kinds of cut garden flowers~ 1st Ruth Close, 2nd Pam Underhill and 3rd was Ann Brookes. Class 21- Container of 1 Delphinium stem and the winner was Pam Underhill. Class 22- Seasonal vegetable or salad, same variety, 2 in number~ 1st Peter Lynam, 2nd Pam Underhill and 3rd Ann Brookes. Class 23- Sadly there were No entries. Class 24- School reception Years 1 & 2- A 3D animal or bird~ 1st Molly Leggat Jones, 2nd Tia and 3rd was Daisy Owst. Class 25- School Years 3 & 4- A nature photograph~ 1st was Kai, 2nd was Libby and 3rd was Sani. Class 26- School Years 5 & 6- Amazonian Art.~ 1st was Rosie Owst, 2nd Indy Mamujee and 3rd was Lucy Barber. There were no entries in Class 27. The Lady Knight Cup was awarded to Pam Underhill, the Rosaleen Bowl was awarded to Ann Brookes with Pam Underhill a worthy runner up. The roles were soon reversed as the Rose Show cup was awarded to Pam Underhill with Ann Brookes being the worthy runner up. In the children’s section, the Sunderland Cup went to Rosie Owst and the Peggy Duncan Cup went to Molly Leggat Jones for her superb ‘Little Red Hen’. In conclusion, grateful thanks must be given to all those who helped, in any capacity either by, providing the delicious cakes, or manning the stalls, making the teas, or clearing away after every one had gone home, to the unsung judges, and to Hilary Ganly, for presenting the awards. The biggest “THANK YOU” must surely go to ALL the exhibitors, especially those who weren’t placed, for taking part,~ for without you, there would be no show. Many of us are eagerly looking forward to the next Horticultural show, - the Flower, Fruit and Vegetable show, which will be held at the Staplecross Village Hall, on Saturday September 5th from 2.30pm onwards. Once again, there will be a great number of classes to consider entering, including flower arranging; home produce; and handicrafts, so get hold of a brochure and start your planning now. STAPLECROSS BOWLS CLUB: Continuing with their busy match fixtures, this popular bowls club has four (4) more matches - all away fixtures - to play over the next few days, beginning with match No: 1 which is on Saturday June 27th and is away to Westfield beginning at 2.30pm. Match No: 2 is away to Cranbrook on Sunday June 28th. Play also commences at 2.30pm. The third (3rd) of their matches will take place on Tuesday June 30th and is against Sidley Martlets with a 2.00pm start time and the last but not least, on Wednesday July 1st will find the team at Hawkhurst for a match commencing at 6.15pm. Whoever said that bowls was too slow and too boring has not seen it played at all, as this game consists of skill, strategy and stamina, - try it and find out for yourself. STAPLECROSS STOOLBALL CLUB: Don’t forget that this Sunday June 28th. sees our own local team hosting the Staplecross Tournament on their home ground at the Playing Field, Northiam Road, Staplecross beginning at 10.0am. If you are in the vicinity, please pop along and cheer them on. It means a lot to have your support, so please do try and spare a few minutes. Tuesday June 30th, sees the team playing away at Robertsbridge at 7.00pm but they’re back home on Thursday July 2nd. for another 7.00pm start time match, this time their opponents will be a team from Icklesham. If you’d like to find out more about this fascinating and rather hectic sport, - some will say it’s a Sussex born & bred sport, - then please contact Pauline on 01580~830570 in the first instance. All will be very welcome.

ROTHER RAMBLERS: Only two (2) walks this week to tempt you, and the first is for a 6.5 mile circular stroll from Brightling to Burwash. Meeting at the triangle of land-just beyond the Brightling Observatory OS EXP124. TQ671209 (SatNav TN32 5HL) on Wednesday July 1st at 6.30pm.This will be a delightful walk and to make it more so perhaps, - temptation in the form of drinks and crisps at The Bear Inn, in Burwash, midway through the walk, may just sway you!. The second walk on the Rother Ramblers’ agenda is slightly longer being a 10 mile meander from Lamberhurst via Bewl Water. Taking place on Saturday July 4th, the meeting place is at Lamberhurst public car park OS EXP136. TQ677362 (SatNav TN3 8DB) at 10.0am. EWHURST & STAPLECROSS BONFIRE SOCIETY: The annual ‘Family Fun Day’ will be taking place at the ever popular local hostelry- The Cross Inn, on Saturday July 4th. between 2.00pm and 5.00pm. There will be many stalls to enjoy and many trials to pit your wit and skills against, including Tin Can Alley; Hoop-la; Coconut Shy; Fish-a-Duck; and Plate smashing and Whack-the-Rat. There will also be the popular Face Painting, Lucky Dip, Tombola and Raffle stalls as well as Family Games Competitions. Don’t forget the “Bonfire Bake-Off” with a prize for the best cake baked, so bring along your yummy cooked cake. Add to this great live music and of course, a superb Bar-B-Q and you have the makings of a fantastic Family afternoon out. Entrance is free, so just come along, bring all the family and have a wonderful time. CHURCH SERVICES: Church services for the parish of Ewhurst will commence at St. James the Great, Ewhurst Green at 9.30am. on Sunday June 28th.Trinity 4.This service will include Holy Communion.(BCP). There will be NO SERVICE held today at St. Giles church, Bodiam but a service will follow directly afterwards at St. Mark’s church, Northiam Road, Staplecross at 11.15am. This service will also include Holy Communion (BCP) Both services will be conducted by Reverend Gordon Winchester and if there is any church matter in which he can be of service to you, he’ll be only to pleased to assist in any way he can.
