EAST SUSSEX HIGHWAYS: ROAD WORKS - There are a great number of road works currently being undertaken throughout our region, including Northiam, Bodiam, Beckley and beyond. These are generally due to the ongoing ‘pot hole problems’;- the Bexhill to Hastings Link Road; and the Rye Harbour works, all in some way or other causing tail backs and delays. One such delay will be the temporary closure of Marley Lane (C94), in Battle. This will happen 20th-21st June - this weekend - when Network Rail will be working on the level crossing overnight and this will incur the temporary road closure. Another road works to perhaps be aware of, will be at the A21 (T) London Road, at Flimwell when teams will be carrying out speed reduction works. Temporary traffic lights and speed restrictions will be in operation. Do take extra care when approaching all road works and please be considerate and give a wide berth to the men working on these sites. They are there working on our behalf, - so please be safe, -- not sorry !

STAPLECROSS VILLAGE HALL: This is an appeal from Hilary Ganly, Chairman of the Village Hall Committee. Many of you may now be aware that the yoga class is no longer being enjoyed at the Staplecross Village Hall. Those of you who take part in these sessions would like them to continue but to do so need a new tutor. If you know of anyone who would be interested in - and able to - take on this class, then do please get in touch with Hilary on 01580 ~830704 in the first instance. This is a popular and friendly class, enjoyed by many and it would be such a shame to see this increasingly favourable past-time disappear completely from the village, so if you can help out, or can encourage some you know to do so, please do so. Talking of encouragement, -- The Village Hall is keen to see and encourage more activities to take place here. The hall has all the facilities that’s required for a huge number of events that can easily be held here. It doesn’t have to be a large format or restricted to just adults. Perhaps a Brownie/Guide or Cub/Scout group could begin here. A film club, or photography group. A Ti Chi or dance group, Tea Dances or other types of activities for the ‘more mature’ adults, a variety of workshops for hobbies/crafts/pastime. A children’s club could be started here. The possibilities are endless and the results could be amazing - both for the people who take part in the activities and the venue that provides the fun. So come along Mums and Dads, - AND Aunts, Uncles, and not forgetting Grandma’s and Grandpa’s, please see if you can do something to make the most of our superb village hall and help make the most of the lovely people that live within our parish.

THE BATTLE OF WATERLOO: Commemorating the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, a iconic date forever set in the annals of English history, a special event will take place at the Manor Barn, De La Warr Road, Old Town, Bexhill TN40 2JA on Saturday June 21st between 12.0 Noon and 6.00pm. There will be something for all members of the family to enjoy and includes ‘Hands on History’ sessions; Military Equipment exhibition, a re-creation of the formal opening ceremony by the Duke of Wellington and Napoleon Boneparte, and much, much more. The Kings German Legion were stationed in Bexhill during 1804 and 1814 and there will be more information connected with this special early branch of soldiering here also. Together with delicious refreshments, there will be slide shows; re-enactments and script-held concerts, and a great deal more, all of which promises to provide a great family afternoon out with fun and entertainment for everyone. THE STAPLECROSS INN: A quick reminder from the lovely staff at this friendly and appealing village pub, that tonight Friday June 19th ‘Release the Geese’ (2 part) an ever popular group will be playing here. The weekly food menu will be available, until 9.00pm. as well as bar snacks. This promises to be a lovely evening out, so try to come along, join in and enjoy the great atmosphere. Also on Sunday June 21st. (Father’s Day, in case you haven’t heard ) the staff at the Inn, are arranging a special menu- just with Dad in mind - There will be roast Lamb with all the trimmings available between 12.0 Noon and 2.00pm. then from 3.00pm a Bar.B.Q. will be available and included in this menu will be ‘pulled pork’ - a culinary delight that’s very popular at the moment. Outside summer games will be on offer for those who wish to play or perhaps even a ‘footie’ game, in the large bottom garden area for whoever wishes to partake in this -Dads versus Kids, perhaps !. A ‘Fathers Day Special’ is also on offer in conjunction with the Classic Car Show, being held at nearby Bodiam, - if anyone drives to the Cross Inn, in a classic car, the driver qualifies for a free pint or a glass of house wine. Maybe a visit to the car show, with the option of a delicious meal in a lovely setting on the way home would be a brilliant special present for that brilliant special man on his own special day.

EWHURST & STAPLECROSS BONFIRE SOCIETY: Just a gentle nudge to remind you all that a mammoth Jumble Sale is being held at Staplecross Village Hall on Saturday June 20th from 2.00pm. Come along and grab yourself a bargain. All donated jumble welcomed and can be brought along to the village hall from 9.30am. STAPLECROSS BOWLS CLUB: Keeping pace with their hectic match fixtures, the teams have no less than four (4) matches lined up this week The first game is for Saturday June 20th and is against Peasmarsh and will be played at their club grounds in Northiam Road, Staplecross beginning at 2.30pm. Match no: 2 is an away game at Ninfield on Sunday June 21st. The club will be returning to their home turf on Wednesday June 24th for an evening match beginning at 6.15pm and their opponents will be Iden. Another home game will be played on the following evening, Thursday June 25th. against Ham Street and will commence at 6.00pm. Supporters are always welcomed at this club, as are those interested in becoming members. ROTHER RAMBLERS: Two more lovely walks are planned for this week and the first will take part on Sunday June 21st. with a 7.5 mile circular tour around the lovely village of East Hoathly. Please meet up at 10.0am in the car park adjacent to the church and school. OS EXP 123. TQ519161.(SatNav BN8 6EQ) This promises to be a delightful walk circling south from the village along farmed and woodland paths, - beautiful at this time of the year, - the paths will be mainly flat and a picnic lunch is suggested. Walk No: 2 sounds really enchanting as well as enticing as it’s entitled “Strawberries & Pimms”. This is another of the groups evening walks and is a 5.5 circular meander of Battle Great Wood. Planned for Wednesday June 24th the group will meet at Battle Great Wood car park, Marley Lane, Battle at 6.30pm. OS EXP 124. TQ765163. (SatNav TN33 0RA) This wood is beautiful to wander in at any time of the year and whatever the season and with the promise of strawberries and Pimms to consume at the conclusion of this wonderful walk will surely make this a firm favourite. All you have to do is bring your strawberries ( plus cream if desired.) and the walk leaders will provide the Pimms, - what could be better than that ? EAST SUSSEX MOBILE LIBRARY: Once again it’s the turn of Ewhurst to have a visit from that super little service,- the Mobile Library. The van will arrive in Ewhurst on Thursday June 25th at 11.10am and will depart for pastures new at 11.40am. Lot’s of facilities are available to the residents of our parish within the doors of this van, and by using these amenities it allows those of us who may not have easy access to the main branches of the Library Service everything that’s on offer. Please do make use of this service as we don’t know how much longer we may have it. The old adage “Use It Or Lose It” is certainly true in this case.

STAPLECROSS STOOLBALL CLUB: Two more fixtures for this busy village club this week. Match no: 1 will take place on Thursday June 25th when they play against the Civil Service on their home ground at the Playing Field, Northiam Road, Staplecross. The match will commence at 7.00pm. Our own Staplecross Tournament will take place on Sunday June 28th and will begin at 10.0am. Please if you can, come along and cheer on your home club and help them on their way to victory. STAPLECROSS BONFIRE SOCIETY: will be hosting a Family Fun Day at the lively Staplecross Inn on Saturday July 4th between 2.00pm and 5.00pm. There’ll be an amazing array of stalls offering a choice of Tin Can Alley; Hoopla; Coconut Shy; Fish-a-Duck; and Plate Smashing !. There is also Face Painting, - always a favourite with youngsters,- Magicians; Lucky Dip and an assortment of Family Games Competition. Of course there will also be a tombola stall and a superb raffle table Together with a fantastic Bar-B-Q and live music, this event definitely should not be missed. Plus, - a “Bonfire Bake Off” with a prize for the best cake baked,- so make a note of the date and bring your yummy cooked cake. This is another of the society’s fund-raising events and if anyone can help on a stall or donate a raffle prize or organise something, or for more information, please contact Katie Matthews on: [email protected] HERDMAN ASSOCIATION: Another Bar-B-Q is planned within our parish boundaries for the month of July and this biennial event (normally held on the village green) will now be taking place on the playing field of the Arthur Herdman Pavilion in Ewhurst Green (SatNav TN32 5TB) on Saturday July 25th This will be a charity event with aid going to Ewhurst PCC and other local charities. It begins at 6.00pm with the gates opening at 5.30pm. It will be a “Ticket Only” event with charges of £12:00 for Adults;- Children under 14 years at £6:00 and pre-school children with free admittance. This is to allow for the organising of the catering in the form of a super hog roast, burgers, sausages and salads. there will also be a licensed bar where you’ll be able to taste and enjoy a new ale named “White Rabbit”, this local ale is brewed by Sally and David Bowles and is actually made in Ewhurst,- what more reasons do you need ? CHURCH SERVICES: Church services for the parish of Ewhurst will commence at St. James the Great, Ewhurst Green on Sunday June 21st Trinity 3.at 9.30am. This service will also include Holy Communion. Despite the needless vandalism of the windows of this beautiful church, the service at St. Giles church, Bodiam,- directly afterwards at 11.15am.- WILL go ahead. This service will also include Holy Communion. There will be NO SERVICE held today at St. Mark’s church, Northiam Road, Staplecross. Both services will be conducted by Reverend Graham Atfield.
