VILLAGE HALL ‘HERO’ Staplecross Village Hall is looking for it’s very own hero. The “Voluntary Job Description” is for a community spirited ‘odd-job’ man (or woman) who when needed, can be called upon to help to sort out any small jobs that may arise from time to time, and that will need ‘dealing with’ in a competent, safe and proper way. This would be a voluntary position, so if you have some spare time on your capable and handy hands and feel that you could devote the occasional hour or so to assist in the smooth running of the Village Hall, and therefore in turn the village, and you feel that this may be just the thing to keep you from becoming bored in any free time you may have, then please get in touch with Hilary (Ganly) who is the Village Hall Committee Chairman on 01580~830704. --- Sorry, but no ‘Superhero’ costume is provided, but grateful thanks, will be always given.

STAPLECROSS ART GROUP: This very popular art class, now in it’s 14th year, has recently resumed their addictive hobby, following their Christmas Holidays. Room can always be for those of you, who have always wanted to paint, but perhaps for various reasons, never got around to bringing it to fruition. Did considering taking up a new hobby feature in one of your New Year Resolutions ? Have you ever fancied trying out this fascinating and so absorbing pastime ? Well, whether water colours, acrylics, chalks or oils are your preferred medium, or portraits, landscapes or still life are your chosen subjects, then this is the place to come along to try them out ! Why not come along to this art group and give it a try ? The group - of all ages and abilities - meet at Staplecross Village Hall every Thursday morning between 10.0am and 12.30pm. and everyone works at their own quiet pace and competence. Whether you are a complete beginner who doesn’t know one end of a paintbrush from the other or someone who would like to re-kindle their past interest, or maybe you have a hidden talent as great as Rembrandt, Constable or Picasso, all will be very warmly welcomed by the very friendly members of this super little art group. As the talented and always so helpful tutor is always saying “All you need is the enthusiasm to paint”, so please give Hilary a ring on 01580~830704 for any further details of what takes place during these fun and very instructive morning ‘lessons’. She’d love to hear from you and would look forward to hopefully encouraging you to becoming an additional and much valued member of this group.

ROTHER RAMBLERS: Two new walks are lined up for our enjoyment this week, and the first is planned to take place on Wednesday January 28th when all those interested in enjoying an eight (8) miles meander over the Rother Levels should meet at the car park at Smallhythe Place, Smallhythe, at 10.0am.OS Exp 125. TQ893299. (SatNavTN307NE) Smallhythe Place is closed for the Winter period, so parking should be freely available. A picnic lunch is suggested and as the scenery is superb in all directions, this will be well worth the walk. The ‘walk leader’ for this stroll is Lionel, so please contact him on 01424~752452 for all further information. Walk No: 2 is entitled “Area AGM pre-ramble”. This is arranged for Saturday January 31st. and will cover a distance of approximately 5.5 miles. The meeting place will take place in The Village Hall in Robertsbridge. OS EXP.124/136. TQ734234. (SatNavTN325DD) The Hall is set back from the road, next to the Ostrich Pub and almost directly across the road from the Railway Station with plenty of parking directly outside in the hall’s car park. Following the mornings excursion, the Area A.G.M. will commence here at 2.30pm. The Hall will be open from 10.0am, should anybody wish to leave belongings behind. This could be just the opportunity for seeking a short, interesting and scenic stroll in friendly company and with not too long a distance to travel to begin it. MOBILE LIBRARY-EWHURST: The Mobile Library van will, on Thursday January 29th. be once more be visiting the inhabitants of Ewhurst Green and all other nearby residents who usually make use of this wonderful FREE service. This route of the Mobile Library service has been split and re-formed to now be part of Route 12 and takes in Robertsbridge, Bodiam, Hurst Green and Burwash. It will be arriving in Ewhurst Green at 11.10am and will depart at 11.20.am. Please continue to make use of this super service which is so important to our rural communities. I have often said, -- it’s not just about books, - so pop in and see what’s available for your interest and enjoyment.

OUT AND ABOUT: If you are looking for a few ideas to take you out from slouching in front of the ‘telly’ - you might be interested in one or two ( or more ! ) of these delightful and varied outings. If music is your interest, and Jazz in particular, why not consider attending this little evening concert which is sure to banish the winter blues. Come along to St. Mary’s Church, Rolvenden on Saturday January 24th. (Tomorrow) and enjoy an evening of music with the Hastings Jazz Connection. Beginning at 7.30pm the tickets are £10:00 and can be obtained by telephoning 01580~241157 or on the door. There will be a cash bar available and all proceeds will go towards preserving the fabric of the church. Another suggestion is a glorious short walk of only 5 miles- medium grade- and is entitled “Bedgebury in Winter”. - a very enticing title. Begebury Pinetum is spectacular at any time during the year and there is so much to see throughout your meander. This stroll is organised by the Northiam Footpath Group and will take place on Sunday January 25th. The group will be leaving Northiam Surgery car park at 1.30pm and if you’d like to participate, please contact Sue Clark on 01797~253428 for any further details. Also taking place on Sunday January 25th will be another “Winter Ramble” but with a big difference. This one will take place around Pett Levels between 10.30am and 2.0pm and will be a gentle stroll of approximately 4 miles. This fascinating nature walk, will be led by Phil Jones and Chris Bentley and they will be taking a look at the wintering birds on the Levels and in the reed beds of Pett Level. Please provide a picnic lunch for yourself and don’t forget to bring that most important of equipment, - your binoculars and camera’s as you’ll never know what amazing sights you might come across. Please meet up at the roadside pool at Pett Level-TQ903146. No bookings are necessary, but donations would be very much appreciated. Suggestion No: 4 On Tuesday January 27th at 7.30pm. The Northiam Historical & Literary Society will be hosting a talk by Ian Everest on “The Women’s Land Army - a Sussex Connection” The venue for this evenings entertainment is Northiam Village Hall. Suggestion No: 5 is a theatre outing entitled “Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka. and will take place on Thursday January 29th at 7.0pm. This is a brand new adaptation by Scene Productions in association with Redbridge Drama Centre and as stated by ‘The Stage’ newspaper “This version of Kafka extraordinary story has a dreamlike quality, powerfully evoked by immaculately slick, highly imaginative physical theatre”. ADVANCE NOTICES: The ladies of Staplecross & Ewhurst Green W.I. are due to meet for their February gathering on Tuesday February 3rd. at 2.30pm in St.Mark’s church room, Northiam Road, Staplecross. The speaker for this month will be Mr. Michael Smith who will be telling us all about Sir Ernest Shackleton and his fascinating Antartic expeditions. The keen and eager members of The Ewhurst, Staplecross & Bodiam Gardening Society will be making their way to the Village Hall, Northiam Road, Staplecross on Thursday February 5th at 7pm. when a very popular speaker, Mr. Kevin Tooher will be talking to us about “Substainable Gardening”. Kevin is a lecturer at Hadlow College, so there can be no excuses now, as there will be lots of advice and practical information to get us all off to a good start in our gardens this year. As well as the usual super raffle and welcoming refreshment, this promises to be another brilliant evening in the 2015 programme for this motivated and enthusiastic gardening group. If you have an interest in anything horticultural, be it large or small, then why not come along as well and join in this very helpful and very friendly group. CHURCH SERVICES: Church services for the parish of Ewhurst will commence at St. James the Great, Ewhurst Green on Sunday January 25th. Epiphany 3. at 9.30am. This service will include Holy Communion (BCP) There will be NO SERVICE at St. Giles church in Bodiam held today, but a service at St.Mark’s church, Northiam Road, Staplecross will follow directly after at 11.15am.and this service will also include Holy Communion (BCP) Both services will be conducted by Reverend Gordon Winchester and as always, if he can be of any further assistance in any church matter, he’ll be only to please to help.
