GARDEN SHOW RESULTS: The Ewhurst, Staplecross & Bodiam Garden recently held their annual Flower, Fruit & Vegetable Show in the Village Hall at Staplecross on Saturday September 6th.. The 112 entries ranged across the various classes resulted in a good array of vegetable classes being entered and these were enticingly displayed for all to see and admire. There were a good variety of vegetables ranging from beans, shallots, potatoes and tomatoes to courgettes, chillies, leeks and sweetcorn. There were also many beautiful displays of flowers, as well as the glorious late roses, whose scent wafted through the hall delighting one & all. There was also some very interesting pot plant entries. The Preserve Section was well supported, as usual, with some new style berry jellies, and of course a show like this would be nothing without plenty of entries in the Jam, Marmalade and Chutney section. The Baking Section however, was rather disappointing with only 1 entrant who had made some very good cakes and bread. Sadly, the Handicraft Section was also lacking in entries although the judges thought that the standard was good. Members, visitors and entrants were able to enjoy tea and homemade cakes throughout the show which only added to the congeniality and friendliness of this great village horticultural show. The awards which were presented by Barbara from the Londis Store, further promoted the community spirit and are as follows; ESB Challenge Cup -most points in vegetable section was jointly awarded to Pam Dance & Pam Underhill. The Members’ Rose Cup was won by Pam Underhill. The Clayton Cup-most points in rose class was taken by Pam Underhill who also took the Banksian Medal-most points in classes 1-33. The Mona Peck Trophy-most points in flower arranging was awarded to Pam Dance and the Fred Buck Trophy-most points in home produce classes was won by Keith Bishop. The Cottagers Cup- most points in show was awarded to Pam Underhill with Pam Dance being a worthy runner up.Pam Dance also won the Hughes Cup-most

JUMBLE SALE RESULT: The day dawned fine and sunny which boded well for all the members and supporters alike who turned out to man the Ewhurst & Staplecross Bonfire Society Mammoth Jumble Sale which was held at the Staplecross Village Hall last Saturday (September 13th) The stalls were heaving with bargains of all shapes & sizes, colours & creeds and bargains really were the order of the day from start to finish. Although a busy and sometimes frantic time was had by all, a great result was achieved at the end of the day. A superb total of £596:30 (after deductions) was raised and this will be added to the Bonfire Society’s coffers in anticipation of being able to donate once more to our local charities and good causes at the end of the year. Grateful thanks are extended to all members and friends who came to help on the day and to all members of the public for parting with their cash, together it was a great day and a great result.

TORCH MAKING EVENT: Just a little reminder of an age old tradition that will be taking place this Saturday September 20th and an appeal for a little bit of help with it.The Ewhurst & Staplecross Bonfire Society have the arduous task,-as it were- of making approximately 1000 torches for this years Bonfire & Torchlight Procession later in the year. ‘Many hands make light work’ goes the saying, and this appeal is hoping that that will indeed be the case. The members will be meeting at the Cross Inn, Staplecross from 9.30am and every pair of hands will be gratefully put to use.The Torchlight Procession cannot function without the torches so please come along for however long a time you can spare and be a part of this great and very friendly group activity.--Every little helps !!!.

“AUCTION of PROMISES”: The Fundraising ‘Auction of Promises’ which is planned for Friday September 26th is another major fund raiser for the Ewhurst & Staplecross Bonfire Society. Taking place in the White Dog Inn, at Ewhurst Green at 7.30pm there are some fantastic ‘promises’ to hold you spell-bound and reaching for your ‘paddle’ to place a bid.With over thirty lots to bid on, your hardest decision may be just what lot to bid on as the choices are wide and very varied including - a hot air balloon ride; a handcrafted garden bench; a boat trip; a family photography shoot; various trips and tours -out and about; 1 nights’ stay at a local 5* B&B; a day’s fishing ; plus many, many more, too numerous to mention.There truly is something for everyone here,- Mum, Dad, Grandma & Grandpa, not forgetting the children and the family pet !. Steve Worobec will be the auctioneer for the evening and the delightful music will be provided by “The Chandeliers”, who have also made a promise for you to also bid on. ROTHER RAMBLERS: Continuing with their love of the great outdoors, this cheerful and friendly group of walkers have arranged a couple of very pleasant and very different walks for us to enjoy over the next few days. One is coastal and one is countryside. The first is for Wednesday September 24th and is an 8 mile Winchelsea- Rye circular. The group will be meeting at 10.0am at Winchelsea Railway Station (SatNavTN364JX) A picnic lunch is suggested and once more dogs are permitted to stroll alongside you. Clive is the ‘Walk Leader’ for this trip out so please contact him on: 01424~882674 for further information. Walk No:2 is planned for Sunday September 28th and is another 8 mile meander, this time it’s a Newenden - Sandhurst circular trip and for all those interested, the group will be meeting up at 9.30am in Newenden (SatNavTN197QW). Please park on the right along the lane opposite the pub, by the recreation ground. As normal, a picnic lunch is the order of the day, and the invitation is extended to include your dog. LINE DANCING SOCIAL EVENING: This Saturday September 27th is a ‘Saturday Night Dance with a Difference’. Taking place from 6.30pm until 10.30pm at the Village Hall, Northiam Road, Staplecross this Step Up & Dance event is Line Dancing Social Evening at it’s most friendliest. The routines encompass both modern and traditional and will get your feet tapping and itching to get on the floor ! You don’t need to know how to line dance to come along, but this could be an ideal opportunity to see what goes on. Enjoy a music and dance evening and maybe have a go yourself !.Everyone is very welcome. Bring your own choice of nibbles & refreshments. Tea & coffee will be available. Cost of tickets are ‘as cheap as chips’, - a mere £5:00 each for dancers with non dancers, guests and the ‘idle curious’ just £3:00 each. CHURCH SERVICES: Church services for the parish of Ewhurst commence at St. James the Great, Ewhurst Green on Sunday September 21st. Trinity 14. with a service at 9.30am. which will include Holy Communion. A service which will also include Holy Communion,will follow at St. Giles church, Bodiam at 11.15am. There will be NO SERVICE today at St. Mark’s church, Northiam Road, Staplecross. A special Harvest Festival on behalf of Staplecross MC Primary School will take place on Friday September 26th at St. Mark’s. Special Harvest Festival celebrations will be taking place on Sunday September 28th at both St James the Great, Ewhurst Green and St. Mark’s, Staplecross, so do try to come along and enjoy the special Thanksgiving Services throughout our parish.
