ROMANIAN ART WORKSHOP: Not long back from her Romanian Charity Art Workshop Adventure, is Hilary Ganly, our well known local Art Tutor. When talking about her trip, Hilary said “ Romania was a great experience. The village where we all stayed was very rural, with everything home grown, - including plum brandy !!!... The people we encountered were lovely, living a simple life with lots of smiles and very grateful for the help being given to these unwanted children.” She would also like to say a huge “THANK YOU” to all those kind and generous people who answered her plea and donated various art materials for this trip. These were so appreciated by all these children and were a great help in making this art event for a camp of 40 abandoned children such a success. So, on their behalf, “Thank You”. Much closer to home now is the information that our our local art class has restarted following Hilary’s return. So if you fancy trying out a new hobby/pastime or would just like to take up your paint brushes once more, this is a perfect opportunity. This is a lovely and very friendly little group of budding artists of all ages, abilities and styles who just love to paint and they meet at Staplecross Village Hall, every Thursday morning between 10.0am and 12.30pm. JUMBLE SALE: It’s that time of the year again (and hasn’t time flown,) when those very busy members of Ewhurst, Bodiam & Staplecross Bonfire Society find themselves gearing up for their annual Winter time Jumble Sale. Taking place on Saturday September 13th at the Village Hall, Northiam Road, Staplecross when the doors will open at 2pm to admit all those clever ‘Bargain Hunters’. These events are always popular as good deals are to be had in all departments. When you’ve finished rummaging, you can refresh yourselves with a well earned cuppa and perhaps a slice of home made cake from the cake stall. Don’t forget there will be a raffle as well to enjoy. If you have any jumble to donate and you cannot deliver it to the Hall itself during the morning, please contact John on 01580~830744 who may be able to arrange for the collection.So bring big bags and little money and see how many great bargains you can ‘bag’!.

TORCH MAKING: Also, please don’t forget that in readiness for the biggest event of their calendar year, the “Bonfire & Torchlight Procession” which will be held this year, on Saturday October 25th.- the ESBS anticipate that they will need over 1000 (!) torches to be made and the saying “Many hands make light work,” is so very true in this case. Please come along and join in this fun filled morning and see the results of your energy and labour being put to such good use during our own “Bonfire Night Extravaganza”. The success of the Torchlight Procession may well depend on you so please bring all your family and friends and come along to this years Torch Making Event which will be taking place on Saturday September 20th. on the car park of the Cross Inn, Staplecross from 9.30.am For all further details again, please contact John on 01580~830744. ROTHER RAMBLERS: Continuing to enjoy this fine weather and certainly hoping to make the most of it, while it lasts, the members of the Rother Ramblers will be out and about this week as four more walks have been organised for our enjoyment. First up is a fairly short walk of a 6 mile circular stroll of Bewl to Ticehurst. Taking place on Saturday September 13th the group are meeting at the Dam in Rosemary Lane (SatNav TN57PT) at 9.30am. A short refreshment break is anticipated midway and as usual, your dog may accompany you. Lionel is your Walk Leader, so please contact him on: 01424~752452 for all further details. Walk No: 2 is on Sunday September 14th and is a bit longer, - well nearly twice as long, so maybe not for the absolute beginners or for the feint-hearted. This is a 11 mile Rolvenden circular via Iden Green ‘stroll’ and those keen walkers interested in joining in, on this walk should all meet up at 10.0am on Sunday September 14th in the side road, near Rolvenden church(SatNavTN174LN) There is ‘on-street’ parking and for further enticement, a pub (or picnic) lunch at Iden Green is suggested. Sadly, on this occasion, dogs are NOT permitted to accompany you. The ‘Walk Leader’ for this event, will be Julia, so please contact her on 01424~437928 for all further details. Walk No: 3 is entitled “The Hop Walk” and gives an intriguing insight of what to expect. Taking place on Wednesday September 17th. those interested in taking part will be meeting at 10.0am in Scotney Castle car park. Sadly car park fees will apply to all NON National Trust members. Hopefully, this walk won’t be such an ordeal as previous as it spans only 8.5 miles. As normal, a picnic lunch is suggested together with a welcome cuppa at the Tea Room at the finish. Dogs are permitted to also enjoy this walk and for all further information please contact Frances on 01424~754548. This lady is a new ‘Walk Leader’ so please endeavour to give her your support. To round off this weeks countryside meanderings, Walk No: 4 is another 8.5 mile circular tour, - this time around Wilmington, - always lovely at any time of the year, with spectacular views from the top of the Downs. Taking place on Sunday September 21st. those interested in taking part, will be meeting at Wilmington Priory car park (SatNavBN265SW) at 10.0am. As usual, a picnic lunch is suggested and our doggy pals are welcome to accompany us.---perhaps they can help us on the walk as notice of one ‘Steep Ascent’ is marked for our attention. Once the top is reached, the views are simply breathtaking, well worth the bit of ‘puff’, as on a clear day, you truly can see for miles. BOWLS CLUB: Keeping up the pressure with their hectic fixture list, the Staplecross Bowls Club have three more matches arranged for this week. On Sunday September 14th. the Club have an away match against Peasmarsh and on Friday September 19th the Club are looking forward to enjoying their annual ‘Candlelight Bowls’ event in the evening. To complete the weeks matches the Club are hosts to Wadhurst Bowls Club with a home fixture on Saturday September 20th. The results of these matches will be announced at a later date. The Club are always ready to welcome new members, and if you are interested in learning more about this game or would like more details of what’s involved or how you can join in, please contact Evelyn via her email [email protected] She’d love to hear from you. LUNCHEON CLUB: Time creeps up on us once more, as the Staplecross Luncheon Club monthly meeting takes place once again. It hardly seems five minutes ago that the members of this small, but warm and friendly social group last met, but time marches on and we must march with it. The group will be lunching at the Staplecross Village Hall on Wednesday September 17th.at 12.30pm. On the menu this week, will be another delectable offering made by our own resident superchef June, who with her band of trusty helpers will be serving delicious ‘Cottage Pie’, with all the usual trimmings, which always means, fresh, seasonal vegetables, accompanied by Apple Pie & smooth, creamy Custard. Just yummy !. To follow, Coffee (or tea) and social chit-chat. We are so lucky to have this special little social group within our community, but there is always room to welcome more to our dining table. Each two course meal, plus coffee costs a mere £5:50 per person, which is very reasonable and there’s no washing up afterwards. They really would love to set a place for you at our friendly dining table.

MOBILE LIBRARY: This important service will once more be visiting our community on Thursday September 18th, bringing more than just library books to our doorsteps. Arriving at Cripps Corner in the car park of the White Hart Inn between 10.15am. and 10.40am.the little van will, via Sedlescombe, arrive at Cricketers Field, Staplecross between 11.50am and 12.20pm. After serving the residents here, it will meander through Brede, Northiam and Bodiam to finally arrive at it’s last destination of the day, at Ewhurst Green between 3.40pm and 4.10pm. Do enjoy all that this facility has to offer you, as plans are afoot to reduce this service radically and we shall all miss it when it’s gone. Don’t be fooled by the title, - The Library Service is about more than just books.

CHURCH SERVICES: The church services for the Parish of Ewhurst will commence at St. James the Great, Ewhurst Green on Sunday September 14th. Trinity 13 with a service at 9.30am. which will include Holy Communion (BCP) There will be NO SERVICE at St. Giles, Bodiam, but a Morning Praise service will take place at 11.15am at St. Mark’s Church, Northiam Road, Staplecross. Both services will be conducted by Reverend Gordon Winchester and if there are any church matters that you would like to discuss with him, please contact him at the Rectory, Ewhurst Green, or by ‘phone 01580~830268 or via his email [email protected] He’ll gladly help however he can.
