Staplecross to start local bonfire celebrations

Bonfire societies from all over Sussex are set to descend on the village for a torchlit procession through the narrow lanes, followed by a bonfire and spectacular fireworks display.

And this year Ewhurst and Staplecross Bonfire Society has a new site for the bonfire.

The new site is between Staplecross and Cripps Corner about 200metres down from The Cross Inn, opposite the entrance of the free parking field.

Taking part in the torchlit procession will be bonfire societies from Battle, Hastings, Robertsbridge, Lewes and Rye.

John Lederer, from the bonfire society, said: “As we had to leave our last location which was used for the bonfire, members have had to spend quite a considerable time preparing the new site.”

“The Society is a charitable organisation, In what has been described by many people as a hard year; the society is once again able to provide a wonderful evening of Guy Fawkes entertainment.

“Members have worked tirelessly throughout the year to raise the funds required to hold this event.

“A big thanks to everyone who has supported the many fund raising events held this year and those who gave their time to make the hundreds of torches and faggots necessary to light the procession and light the Grand Bonfire in the traditional way.

“Also a big thanks to the many individuals, businesses, organisations and public services that have donated time and money, to make our celebrations a roaring success.

“Proceeds from the collection buckets will be donated to St Michaels Hospice, Demelza House, The Air Ambulance. Ewhurst Football Club, Staplecross Village School and other local charities and organisations.

“Cheques will be presented at the Bonfire Society’s annual carol service, to be held this year at St Marks Church, Staplecross on 1st December.

“This is a wonderful family evening, where many society members wear their costumes. So come along and join us for a memorable evening.

“Please remember that roads are closed until 10pm so anyone parking locally will not be able to leave until 10pm.”

Battle Bonfire, which was to have been on Saturday December 3, has now been cancelled due to the conditions of the bonfire site on the battlefield.

There will be a family bonfire at Robin Hood Field, Icklesham, on Monday November 5.

The bonfire spotlight then falls on Rye on Saturday November 10 with a bonfire and fireworks on The Salts, before moving to Robertsbridge on Saturday November 17.
