A LANCING woman was presented with a certificate in recognition of knitting her 1,000th teddy bear for Bosnian children on Friday.

Irene Seymour, of Alexandra Road, has spent the last five years knitting teddy bears for Mustard Seed Relief Missions, which takes shoe boxes filled with toys out to Bosnia.

The certificate was signed by the charity s director general Mike Trott and presented to her by Peter Kersey, who has driven several convoys over to Bosnia.

Mrs Seymour said she started making the bears in 1996 after she had a pacemaker fitted and a friend, Agnes Carter, who had also had one fitted, suggested she took it up as a hobby.

They became involved with Mustard Seed Relief Missions through Lancing Methodist Church, which supplies shoe boxes to the charity.

Mrs Seymour said: "The pamphlet said it was better than a spot of medicine if a child could cuddle one of these."
