Steyning Grammar gets green light for diploma

STAFF and governors at Steyning Grammar School were celebrating after being given the go-ahead to offer a coveted education diploma.

From September, 2009, the school will offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB), after being given authorisation by International Baccalaureate Organisation, in Geneva.

The authorisation is a significant accomplishment for the school, and follows it being awarded International School Status by the Department for Children, Schools and Families.

Sixth-form students at Steyning Grammar will be able to benefit from an enriched and broader curriculum base from which to progress to universities and colleges worldwide.

The broad range of A-level courses on offer will continue to be taught.

Head teacher Dr John Peat said he was delighted with the school success.

"There are now 140 schools in the UK which are accredited to offer the IB," he said.

"Worldwide, 80,000 students study for this diploma, which was first introduced in 1968.

"Universities are enthusiastic in their attitude to the IB.

"We are looking to run a small IB group from September, 2009.

"Students have to follow six subjects, they also have to complete a 4,000-word extended essay, extra curricular work and a course on the theory of knowledge."
