Steyning Jazz Club hosts Harry Strutters Jazz Band
Steyning Jazz Club hosts Harry Strutters Jazz Band on Friday, May 1.
Club spokesman Colin Jilks said: “Greatly applauded and admired, the band specialises in recreating the jazz and hot dance band music of the 1920s and 1930s, with its characteristic drive, wit and allure, focusing on the music that flourished in New York's legendary nightclubs during the period.
“Having toured widely throughout the UK, Europe and Scandinavia, the band makes a welcome return to Steyning, and they will be featuring the deliciously-sparkling vocalist Marlene Hill, from America. The band line-up will be: band leader Megs Etherington on trumpet and vocals; Martin Nickless, reeds; Paul Taylor, trombone; Martin Litton, piano; Maurice Dennis, banjo and guitar; Peter McCurrie, bass; and Graham Collicot, drums.
“Founded originally in Brighton many years ago, this is a band that has gone from strength to strength, their enjoyably infectious music creating an extraordinary period authenticity, leaving audiences thirsting for more; we can expect an evening of enticing contrapuntal swing, rhythm and glittering musicality. We are anticipating numbers like The Charleston, C Jam Blues, It Don't Mean A Thing If Ain't Got That Swing, and many more.
“Over the years the band has released numerous albums on labels such as Black Lion Records, Flyright and Circle Records. There was Bouncing Around (1975), a foundational LP featuring tracks like Clementine and Snake Rag. Rhythm King (1977/1979), one of their most widely distributed albums, containing their versions of The Charleston and Black and Tan Fantasy. Totus Porcus (1980), released through Black Lion Records. Borneo (1986), featuring classic covers like Barnacle Bill and St James Infirmary Blues and Crazy Chords. (1989/1994), a collection available on CD that includes Mood Indigo and Deep Henderson.”
