Street pastors have been raising money for charity by walking from Eastbourne Pier to Hastings Pier over the bank holiday weekend.

The idea for the walk was first mentioned by coordinator Martin West and Hastings street pastor Nick Warren earlier this year.

There were 14 walkers who completed the trek along the south coast. Five came from Hastings & Rye Street Pastors, two from the Bruderhof Community at Darvell, Roberstbridge, and seven ladies from Martin’s home church, Living Word Church in Bexhill.

The first to finish were three ladies from Living Word Church, who at six and a half hours, were a good 30 minutes ahead of the next group. It is hoped that more than £2,000 will be raised to help Hastings and Rye Street Pastors continue providing support to the community.

The continued support of the street team is having a significant impact on the crime rate in communities and the town centres.

Mr West said: “Of the 14, the youngest was just 15 and the oldest 69. It was completed on a lovely sunny day with a cool breeze and a blue cloudless sky, everyone completed the walk without incident.”

In 2016, the street team helped people on 608 separate occasions and supplied 272 pairs of flip flops to ladies with insufficient footwear. The team also provided 431 bottles of water free of charge and more than 1,700 bottles, tins and cans were safely disposed of, improving the environment and inhabitants of the local areas.
