Student parking scheme launched

A student parking scheme has started in Bognor Regis.

Fifty parking spaces have been set aside in the London Road car park for those studying at the University of Chichester.

The initiative has been recently launched by Arun District Council to help meet the concerns of residents around the Glenwood Estate about students parking in front of their properties.

District and county councillor Francis Oppler told this week's town council meeting the university had bought 450 permits for the designated spaces, at 20 for a year's parking, to hand out to students.

'It's just a case now of if the students can be bothered to drive that little bit further to the coach park and walk that little bit further from there to the university,' he commented.

The coach park is located on the opposite side of Upper Bognor Road to the campus.

Cllr Oppler said action needed to be taken because of the extent of the students' parking along the likes of Madeira Avenue, Glenwood Avenue and Hook Lane.

The situation was a major concern for residents. Any expansion of activities on the campus by the unversity had to consider parking as the number one issue, he added.
