Student scoops place in repair industry final

A young motor vehicle apprentice at Sussex Downs College has displayed the skill and dedication needed to become one of the repair industry's top technicians.

Body repair and paint apprentice, Ricky Mote has made it through to the final of the Young Painter of the Year Award at the prestigious Bodyshop Magazine / Thatcham Craft Awards, designed to recognise the very best technicians in the body repair industry. Thatcham is the Insurance Companies Repair and Research centre in Berkshire, attended by motor manufacturers and influential players in the accident repair industry.

Ricky, from Bexhill, works for Peter Johnson Motor Body Repair in Hastings, he said: "The support from tutors is really good at the college, I wouldn't have known about the competition if it hadn't been for them and they have given me lots of helpful tips."

Ricky continues: "The competition will help my reputation as an employee as I am competing against the best in the country."

The winners will be announced at the Gala Awards Dinner on Friday, 21 September which will be held at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole.

Jan Gormley, personal tutor for apprentices, said: "This is a really exciting opportunity for Ricky as the competitors representing the UK in the paint and body repair categories in the 2009 Skill Olympics in Canada will be chosen from the 2007 winners of the Bodyshop Magazine/Thatcham Craft Awards."
