Students show their festive spirit

The St Philip Howard Catholic High School sixth formers ended their past term with a range of activities.

Andrew Martin, in Year 13, reflected on the role of music in the festive season.

He said: “Music plays a vital role at St Philip Howard and in the community and I will be very sad to leave it at the end of my final year.

“We held an afternoon concert, Carols by Candlelight, for the older people in the area and recently visited Westergate House care home to perform for the residents.

“Music also contributed to other festive activities such as the deanery advent service at Arundel Cathedral.

“We ended the term with a lunchtime concert in the hall which proved very successful judging from the reactions of students who were clapping and singing.”

Fellow sixth former Jess Pilkington and her colleagues ran the Santa Claus grotto in a donated shop at Barnham’s late night shopping event with their business and enterprise company Origin.

They also ran their own stall and raised a significant amount towards the cost of their young enterprise company.

This was followed by having a stand at the Christmas fair held by the Friends of Barnham School the next night.

Meanwhile, St Philip Howard’s geography department staged a recycled art challenge.

Year 13 student Jo Jordan and her Back Room Crew won first prize for their steam train with a different carriage for different types of waste.

“The train represents different recyclable wastes. Some that people are aware of, such as cans and paper, but others that are less well known like crisp packets and food packaging.

“This challenge not only helped promote the green ethos of the school but it also brought the sixth form together in some healthy competition.”
