Success follows police drink-drive campaign extension

SUSSEX drivers who risked combining drinking with driving and extended the practice beyond the holiday period and into 2008 have come a cropper.

Sussex Police said this week that the force has continued its high-profile drink-drive checks well into the new year.

"The results support our intelligence assessment of there being a post Christmas hangover - where drivers continue to risk drinking and driving.

"We will have similar high-profile periods of activity throughout the year, which will coincide with the rises in drink related collisions we identify through analysis.

"This is a priority for Sussex and, by active enforcement of the available legislation, we intend to reduce the numbers of those killed or injured on our roads."

The continuation of the Christmas drink drive campaign resulting in:

*More than 700 drivers being breathalysed by Road Policing Unit officers

*120 resulting in positive results - 17%
