Success for Plumpton College apprentices in national awards

Two apprentices at Plumpton College Butchery School have been awarded prizes.

It was a successful night for Samuel Deighton, 18, and Matthew Smith, 27, at the Institute of Meat (IoM) and Worshipful Company of Butchers annual prize-giving last Tuesday (February 21).

Mr Deighton was named Champion Meat Apprentice of the Year and Mr Smith won Apprentice Showing Management Potential at the event, which took place at Tallow Chandlers Hall, in London.

They competed against students and apprentices from around the country and were presented with their trophies and certificates of achievement by Stuart Thompson, master of The Worshipful Company of Butchers.

Mr Deighton is an apprentice of Barfields Butchers, in Brighton. He said: “The course is brilliant and I have learned so much about butchery from both the course and my employees, Barfields.”

He has been working with assessor Nick Dean, from Plumpton College, for nine months. Mr Dean, said: “Sam has worked incredibly hard and I am delighted that this has been recognised by his peers and industry. Sam has excellent skills and is determined to continue developing these and progress as a butcher.”

Mr Smith, of Garlic Wood Farm Shop, in Steyning, said: “I really enjoyed the apprenticeship and I learned a lot from my assessors and the college.”

He has been working with assessor Tony Meredith, from Plumpton College, for a year. Mr Meredith, said: “Matt is exceptional, not only in management ability but in his determination to succeed as a manager. He has worked incredibly hard and I am delighted to see his efforts being rewarded at such a prestigious event.”

As well as trophies and certificates, the pair were both awarded £250 and a years’ honorary membership to The IoM.

The IoM annual prize-giving has been running for more than 25 years and it aims to recognise and celebrate individual achievement in the meat industry.
