Successful Sea Scouts win high praise from navy

Thriving 1st Felpham Sea Scouts has received its highest marks in recent memory from the navy.

The satisfaction rating was just one feature of a year of continued success for the group based in Vicarage Lane.

Group Scout leader Kim Rhodes paid tribute to the hard-working team of leaders, assistants and parents whose dedication had been so vital to the group's good work. All areas were thriving and had waiting lists.

Grants during the past year had been received from the Royal Navy, Felpham Parish Council, and Bognor Regis Freemasons had enabled a second safety boat and new dinghy launching trolleys to be purchased.

The many young people in the group's Beavers, Cubs and Scouts had taken part in many activities ranging from weekly meetings and sailing evenings to hikes and camps.

The Beaver colony had been very busy with walks in Kingley Vale, a sleepover at Slindon with a Robin Hood theme, a boat trip in Chichester harbour and crab fishing at Littlehampton. They had also worked on a wide range of badges.

Chief Scout bronze awards had been awarded to Daniel Farrant, Leo Pearce, Billy Richardson, Lloyd Riseborough, Harry Sear, Alex Bannerman, George Bliss, Cameron Norris-Guy, Aaron Pacey, Harry Palmer, Harry Waters, Daniel O'Brien, Jack Vivash, Jamie Vivash and Will Carter.

The two Cub packs continued to thrive with lots of varied activities from a camp to a visit to the Isle of Wight.

Cubs who were awarded their Chief Scout silver awards during the year were Ashley Bingham, George Bingham, Scott Bingham, Holly Lewis, Daniel Cox, Jordan Thomas, Megan Lewis and Frank Zendjebil.

The Scout troop had another busy and energetic year. The highlight was an international camp in Finland. A summer camp on HMS Bristol, hiking on the South Downs and powerboating were among their other activities. Three scouts achieved their Chief Scout gold award.

The meeting ended with the presentation of the following awards:

Wednesday Cub Pack: Cub Scout of the Year: Nicola Embleton. Akela Special Award: Jake Miller, Jake Evans. Inter-Six Sports: White Six.

Scout Troop: Scout of the Year: Joanna Lampard. Sailing Award: Oliver Russell. Hiker Award: Rachel Farrant. Swimmer Award: Oliver Grubb. Footballer Award: Daniel Embleton.

Kayak Award: Chloe Beedell. Leaping Wolf Award (New Cub from Scout): Grant Alldred. Medals of Merit: Julia Cowell, Holly Shipton, Steve Shipton (parent helper).
