Julia Cuppini will succeed current town clerk Peter Mills, who will step down this summer after 13 years in the role.

More recently she has been the regional surveyor for the Country Land and Business Association.

Announcing the appointment, council chairman Richard Bye said: “We are delighted to have found someone whose experience, particularly in planning and land management, will be of great value to the council.

“As well as her professional qualifications Julia’s varied roles have ensured that she not only has a thorough working knowledge of the roles of town and parish councils but also those of district and county councils and an understanding of Government policies and guidelines.

“Throughout her career she has gathered administrative and financial skills, all of which make her an ideal candidate to carry out the wide range of responsibilities of a town clerk.”

Julia will work alongside Peter until he retires at the end of July.

Meanwhile, Battle councillors Ron Harris and Paula Fisher are organising a community event to say goodbye to the outgoing clerk.

At a council meeting on Tuesday night, councillors agreed to set aside up to £1,200 for the event, which is expected to take place at Battle Memorial Hall on July 25.

Between 80 and 100 people are expected to attend the event.

Further details have yet to be finalised.
