Dan Lake was supportive of the proposals for the former school site as he believes it will be good for the community.

“In terms of social housing, we definitely need that in Tilling Green so it will be good for people especially for the younger ones who can’t get one-bed flats,” he said.

“We’re also getting a nice, brand new community centre so it’s going to be good for the area.”

Housing association AmicusHorizon and Rye Partnership submitted the planning application to Rother District Council following a public consultation.

There was originally controversy over the plans with some groups concerned about the interim period between the old centre closing and the new one opening.

But Mr Lake said most groups have now found temporary accommodation or places to store their equipment during building work.

“I think in some ways it’s different for different people as most have now found alternative accommodation and only a couple are struggling to find somewhere,” he said.

“I think it’s mainly people needing storage.

“There’s a few people that are not happy about it but a lot of people who are so it’s difficult – you can never please everyone.

“But this is definitely a positive thing for the area.”

The final say rests with RDC’s planning committee and a decision is due by February 2, 2016.
