Horsham MP Jeremy Quin said West Sussex was home to ‘some of our finest food and drink’ including the ‘exceptional’ cheese in the House of Commons today (Thursday March 2).

He asked ministers what further opportunities they saw for ‘high quality well branded locally providenced food’.

George Eustice, minister for agriculture, fisheries and food, replied: “The quality heritage of our local foods such as the Sussex Charmer Cheese that he mentioned and all the great wines produced in the South Downs is absolutely second-to-none.

“That’s why we have set up the Great British Food Unit to promote our food at home and abroad and why I’m today just returning late sadly from Gulfood the largest annual trade fair.”

Speaker John Bercow quipped: “Very exciting.”

Sussex Charmer, which is a cross between a traditional mature farmhouse cheese and a Parmesan, is made by Bookham and Harrison, a partnership between Rob Bookham and Tim Harrison.
