Tackling drugs in Worthing

ORGANISATIONS dealing with substance abuse in Worthing have been promoting their services.

Worthing Crime Reduction Initiative (CRI) joined other local agencies to set up a stall in Montague Place, Worthing, to inform people about the work they do.

The CRI can help anyone aged between 18 and 65 with a drug or alcohol problem through its structured day programme based at a centre in Teville Road.

Young people, aged between 10 and 19, can also receive support from the CRI through outreach sessions held at various places in the town.

Kate Drake, Worthing CRI project manager, said: "We help people of all ages, both men and women, to reach the goals they set themselves.

"We provide structured group work, as well as one-to-one sessions with an assigned key worker, to help people explore the issues around their substance misuse."

Sussex Oakleaf, a charity helping people with drug problems to remain in their homes, was also handing out leaflets on the day.

In an average year, it saves around 50 people in West Sussex from losing their accommodation by giving advice on benefits, debt management and prevention of evictions.

Petra Brown has worked there for almost two years.

She said: "People are generally referred to us if they need help managing their finances.

"It's very rewarding when you see people come through their problems as there is still quite a negative image of people with substance misuse problems."

Another agency tackling drug use in Worthing is Addaction.

It offers drop-in and telephone advice, needle exchange, HIV information and many other services.
