Take-away a "crackling" idea

A hog roast take-away is set to open in the Old Town after being hailed "a crackling good idea".

Well-known local musician Russell Field is planning on setting up the eatery in the Trade Paints Garden in High Street.

The area is currently in use as a public garden but members of Hastings Borough Council last week voted in favour of Mr Field's plans.

Referring to the 15 letters of objection to the take-away, Councillor Godfrey Daniel said: "I know some people are against this but there could be a house or shop built there so it is quite generous of the owners to let it stay open to the public.

"This is a valuable space to the Old Town so I say good luck to them - it is a crackling good idea."

Cllr Peter Armstrong voiced concerns about the smell from the cooking wafting to nearby homes.

But Tim Cookson, the authority's planning officer, said his fears had been looked at, saying: "We are not the food police."

The plans were approved unanimously.
