Taking steps to learn new dance

YOUNGSTERS graduated in some new skills on the latest courses run by West Sussex Youth University on Saturday.

At Boundstone Community College, Lancing, the children, aged nine to 13, from different schools in Adur, have been taking part in courses on safari art and jive rock and roll.

The art course involved researching the styles, colours and influences of African art, with the pupils creating their own pieces, including clay animals, jewellery and pieces of tribal-style pottery. The dance course involved learning the steps to jive and rock and roll in just three weeks.

The West Sussex Youth University courses have been running since February, 2002, and have so far involved more than 150 courses for 1,500 young

people.

Courses include ones based on the arts, design technology, science and music, as well as drama, ICT and cookery.

In some areas, the courses are funded by a New Opportunities Fund Grant, parental contribution and subsidy from West Sussex County Council.
