Talk reveals Littlehampton’s Home Front efforts

Martin Hayes, county local studies librarian, is presenting the Great War West Sussex 1914-18: The Home Front, Civilians at War talk to mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.

He said: “I’ll be remem-bering the contribution local people made to the war efforts. For example, did you know Littlehampton had one of the earliest motorised units which used motorcycles?

“Some local businesses contributed to the war effort; such as boat-builders Hubert Williams, which made hulls for Royal Flying Corps sea-planes.

“The first games of baseball in Sussex were seen on Littlehampton Common, during summer 1918. The games were played by American servicemen building the US airbases at Ford, Rustington and Tangmere.

“There are many other stories like these which I look forward to sharing.”
