Some of these communities have been working on the problem for more than a decade and, although this is relatively new to the UK, the idea of recycling almost 100 per cent of our waste could become a reality.

Zero Waste UK was set up in May this year by people who fear the introduction of hundreds of mass burn incinerators scattered around the country.

Determined to break through bureaucratic barriers Zero Waste UK has organised the one-day conference at Sussex University, securing seven of America's finest zero waste experts for the day.

Juli Johnson, from Zero Waste UK, said: 'The response has been incredible. We have booked in representatives from town, district and county councils across the country. Interest has even been generated from other European countries and we have delegates coming from as far away as Slovenia and North Africa.'
