Teachers to go on strike in Littlehampton

TEACHERS at The Littlehampton Academy will go on strike tomorrow (Wednesday, April 17).

The action has been called by both the National Union of Teachers (NUT) and the NASUWT, unions that together represent the overwhelming majority of teachers at the school.

The strike follows mounting concerns by members of staff over working conditions at the site, which is part of the Woodard Academy chain.

It is unclear how many teachers will be taking part in the demonstrations and how many classes could be affected by the industrial action, which is the first in a line of three strikes this month.

More protests will take place on April 24 and 25.

However, the academy, in Fitzalan Road, will remain open to students throughout these periods.

In a statement to the Gazette, school principle, Steve Jewell, said that since the academy opened standards had been raised “significantly”.

However, he said: “There is no room for complacency and we understand that there is much more to be done yet. We will continue to set high standards and monitor performance, celebrating the widespread good and outstanding teaching and providing support where necessary.”

He added: “Our students deserve no less.”

The school’s website has released advice for parents in its “letters” section.

A letter by Mr Jewell, to parents and students, says information about class cancellations will be streamed inside the school’s main atrium.

When lessons are not continuing, students will be allowed to remain on site or return home. However, if leaving the school, they must sign out at reception.

Food will still be available at break and lunch.

Students are also being encouraged to bring their mobile phones to school on strike days.

All those concerned about the industrial action are being urged to contact the school’s various chapter heads, by calling 01903 711120.
