DANCE CLASS: Children’s Dance Class every Tuesday from 9.15am to 9.45am for pre-school age 2 to 4 years, £3.50 per session. The class is at the Civic Centre. Contact Anneli Smith via Civic Centre, 01273 589777.

FOOTNOTES: I know that getting old is inevitable, but I have resented it since I was about 20 years old. This was brought back to me this week, whilst spending time navigating the new lay-out in Newhaven’s Sainsburys, which currently is adding another 30 minutes or so to my shopping time, as I struggle up one aisle and down another in search of goods in this case my favourite sweetener, which before I had been able to walk to and pick up without even thinking about it. When I had finally tracked it down, it had been placed on the top shelf, and cursing to myself, I stretched up to fumble at the cardboard tray. Just as my fingers touched it, I heard a voice behind me say, ‘Having trouble reaching it dear? Let me’. I turned to find a woman of about 40, smiling and who reached up, picked up the offending jar and placed it in my trolley. I thanked her profusely, and staggered on my way. Now it was a very kind gesture, but it made me feel as old as the hills. I remembered the times, when I used to do the same thing for others and realised the wheel was turning full circle. I went back to my shopping list, another sign of ageing, as I can now never remember what I need and fought my way through the list, trailing up and down the aisles. Finally, I cleared the check-out and walked out into bright sunshine and drove home to the first coffee of the morning. At least I am not yet using buses, so no young whippet can stand up and offer me his or her seat. That is if they still do that these days, and it has not been consigned to the past.
