Testing public perceptions with work

Fast food meets long-lasting religion in a startling photographic work by a North Bersted student.

Arion Gadd has produced a digitally-manipulated portrait of a Thailand temple with a McDonald's branch for his first exhibition.

Arion (22) said: "I wanted to show the way the commercialism of the western world is affecting the ways of the east.

"As McDonald's have a branch opposite the Great Pyramid in Egypt, it probably won't be too long before they open at other similar sites, anyway."

His work will be among more than 40 images from BA (Hons) photography students at the University of Portsmouth which will soon be on show.

Their exhibition '“ called Everything, Always '“ takes place at Portsmouth Cathedral from January 17 to 29. It is based around the concepts of space and place.

Arion, of Babsham Lane, is in his second year on the course. He has joined other students in helping to organise the exhibition to provide experience in the practicalities of putting on a public event.

"I am a bit nervous about seeing my work on show but there has been a lot to do before then," he explained.

"I never realised how much was involved in putting on an exhibition. We've done everything from getting the invitation cards printing for the opening to getting enough money to put it on."
