Thakeham and Ashington residents ready for landfill battle

CAMPAIGNERS are preparing to fight a proposed landfill site at Laybrook brickworks, on the Billingshurst road between Thakeham and Ashington.

The landfill planning application from Cory is expected to be in the public domain within the next few weeks. The scheme would impact on small communities in the surrounding local area, which say the effect of heavy lorries using unsuitable country lanes alone makes the site totally unsuitable for landfill.

An extraordinary meeting of Ashington Residents' Association has now been called for Wednesday May 6 at the Methodist Church Hall in London Road, Ashington at 7pm, with applicants Cory and Thakeham Village Action to discuss the issue.

A protest parade is planned for 11 am on Saturday May 9, walking from Ashington to the brickworks. The road will be closed to traffic, as will Hooklands Lane for a short period.
