Planning permission has been granted to change the use of The Tree to a museum, to demolish the 20th century extensions and renovate the inside of the main building, parts of which are thought to date back to the 13th century.

Crawley Borough Council has drawn up the plans, which also include building a glazed extension to link the main listed building with the annexe.

The council’s development control committee approved them unanimously.

The council has already received a £113,500 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to fund the work. On Monday December 9 it will hear if its second bid has been successful.
