Thief caught in Worthing shop cash grab

AN off-duty police community support officer helped catch a thief who grabbed cash from a Worthing town centre shop.

The theft took place in the Wilkinson store in the Guildbourne Centre at around 5.15pm on Thursday, January 15.

A man took some sweets to a till and, when the cash drawer was opened, reached over and grabbed a handful of notes before running out of the shop, avoiding a security guard.

Quick-thinking staff called the Shopwatch scheme and PCSO Marcus Foord, who was leaving the Chatsworth Road police station after finishing his shift, overheard the suspect's description on his radio.

He went to the nearby entrance to the shopping centre and spotted the thief, who was being chased by security guards.

PCSO Foord then tackled the man to the ground, keeping him there until police officers arrived to arrest the man.

Sergeant Ian Kerr described PCSO Foord's role in the arrest as "a good bit of work".
