Those were the daring days on the beach

DARING days when mixed bathing was first allowed on our beaches were marked on Sunday with Bexhill Bathing Belle and Beau competitions.

Eighteen-year-old Marie Stevens, from West St Leonards, and 20-year-old Toby Oakley, from Gatehouse Close, took the titles after a long, rainswept afternoon on the seafront, where the poor weather took its toll on contestants and audience.

Just eight contestants, five girls and three men, took part. And as thundery showers kept most seafront walkers indoors, the audience ranged from a few family members to around 30 during the course of the day.

Both winners received a modelling contract from Studio 17 modelling agency and a portfolio of professional pictures.

As thundery showers interupted proceedings for the umpeenth time, several model rounded off the day by taking to the water for a centenary dip in the briny, all in historic costume.
